Botetourt County Businesses Visit Port of Virginia to Strengthen Supply Chain Connections

Botetourt County staff and representatives from three County manufacturing companies visited the Port of Virginia September 15-16 as part of an effort to strengthen connections between local businesses and the largest port on the East Coast.

Representatives from Eldor, Tread and Maag joined County staff for the visit, which gave supply chain managers an opportunity to meet directly with Port of Virginia officials and learn more about the port’s operations.

The visit focused on the capabilities available to companies that rely on the port to import materials or export finished products.

For Botetourt's global manufacturers, those connections can be important when questions or problems arise during the movement of goods. Having direct contacts at the port can help companies better understand how to address issues involving their shipments.

The visit also provided the companies with a closer look at how cargo moves through the ports and the infrastructure supporting its operations.

The port's continued investment in infrastructure is significant for Virginia businesses that depend on international supply chains.

The Port of Virginia has undergone significant infrastructure improvements in recent years. Following an extensive dredging project, the port now has the deepest and widest commercial shipping channel on the U.S. East Coast.

The channel was deepened to 55 feet, allowing larger container ships to access the port with heavier loads.

For the Botetourt County companies participating in the visit, the trip provided an opportunity to see those operations firsthand, and meet with port officials to gain a better understanding of the resources available to support their import and export needs.

The visit is part of the County's broader efforts to maintain connections between businesses and the infrastructure and organizations that support their daily operations.
